We’re all feeling it – life is busier, louder and more overwhelming than ever! As adults, we’re doing our best to juggle responsibilities while trying to stay afloat emotionally and mentally. Meanwhile, our children are growing up in a world that’s so different from the one in which we did with social pressures many of us never experienced.
All of this means it’s really hard to know how to help them and how we can raise mentally strong children who thrive rather than just survive.
That’s what Dr Daniel Amen is going to be talking about when he joins us for an exclusive live webinar on Tuesday 13 May.

Mental strength isn’t about toughness, it’s about tools
Mental strength is often misunderstood as “toughing it out” or “pushing through.” But in reality, it’s about giving our children the tools they need to regulate their emotions, manage stress, recover from setbacks and build a healthy sense of self-worth.
For neurodivergent children, who we know are probably already navigating social, emotional and sensory challenges, building these tools is especially important. Mental strength isn’t something any child is born with or without, it’s something which we need to nurture within them.
Why the modern world is mentally draining
From constant digital stimulation to academic pressures to social media comparison, children are exposed to more input than ever before. Add to that the reality of navigating a neurodivergent brain in a world that often isn’t built with neurodiversity in mind, and it’s no wonder so many of our kids are struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, or burnout.

Most of us are doing what we think is best: solving problems quickly, smoothing the path, and protecting our children from discomfort. But what Dr Daniel Amen will be seeking to teach us is that mental strength isn’t built in calm waters. It’s built in small moments of challenge, guided by support and encouragement.
What do mentally strong kids really need?
According to Dr. Daniel Amen, mentally strong children need more than just love and encouragement.
Here are a few key takeaways from what Dr. Amen teaches about raising mentally strong kids:
- 🧠 Brain health matters: Our children’s mental strength is tied closely to how well their brain functions. Sleep, nutrition, movement, and even 20 minutes of quiet a day can make a huge difference.
- 🛠 Mistakes are part of the process: When we fix everything for our kids, we rob them of the chance to build resilience. Letting them fail, while staying close to support them, teaches problem-solving and builds confidence.
- ❓ Be curious, not furious: We all know that behaviour is communication which means that challenging behaviours are often signs of deeper struggles. Approaching them with curiosity rather than frustration helps children feel safe enough to learn and grow.
- 🪞 Your regulation is their model: How we manage our own stress, anger and anxiety gives our children a template. Mental strength begins with us.
